SIXTEEN (16) Badjao couples exchanged marriage vows last February 13, 2016 at Sonresa Beach in barangay Bayabas this city.
The Badjao mass wedding was initiated by the Psychosocial Association of the Philippines (PSAP) led by Dr. Merle Adaza and the Badjao Task Force spearheaded by the city government and different non-government organizations.
Through Badjao rituals, the mass wedding ceremony successfully ended with a ‘gala-gala’ and sharing of the tribe’s main staple- cassava and fish.
In his message, Mayor Oscar Moreno believes in inclusive growth where no one should be left behind.
The City Government, in partnership with the PSAP and NGO’s, provide intervention programs for the Badjao's in the city. This is aimed at providing legitimacy for their children and allow them to grow up like any ordinary child.
Soon they will be relocated to better homes, their children are already sent to schools to acquire education and will be provided with healthcare assistance just like other residents in Cagayan de Oro.
