Cagayan de Oro, under the administration of Mayor Oscar Moreno, once again bagged another prestigious award as one of the only two cities awarded the Seal of Good Education Governance by Synergeia Foundation during the 11th National Education Summit held in Manila recently.
The award body recognizes local government units’ initiative in delivering basic and quality education to public school children and making it a priority in their governance agenda.
Mayor Moreno, conferred the Education Champion title by the Department of Education, did not only construct almost 500 classrooms both in the elementary and secondary level at the start of his term as city’s chief executive to address the shortage that has been neglected for years, but involved the community, teachers and parents as well by equipping them through trainings and workshops their role in molding a child’s education, in partnership with the Synergeia, PLDT and Smart Communications and other private entities.
Among the criteria for judging is the LGU’s initiative in inventing and broadening the membership of the Local School Board (LSB) that includes private education sectors, the local chamber of commerce, interfaith organizations, the youth and the non-teaching personnel of the Department of Education.
A functional School Governing Council and the decrease of the non-readers and frustrated readers by 15 percent are among the indicator performance of a good education governance of an LGU which Mayor Moreno initiated.
The award also includes a P1.5 million package for innovative education programs.
