A natural sportsman as he is, Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno’s love and passion in the sports of boxing is unquestionable. Back then, when he was first elected as Governor of the Province of Misamis Oriental in 2004, Mayor Moreno groomed a stable of young, potential boxers who considered boxing as a stepping stone to get out of the bondage of misery and poverty in life.
Since then, Mayor Moreno’s scientific, grassroots-based amateur boxing program under the tutelage of former world boxing champion Rene Barrientos and national coach Elmer Pamisa has produced outstanding talents with the likes of IBF junior flyweight champion Milan ‘El Metodico’ Melindo; the Pagara brothers, Jason and Prince Albert, RP boxing team regular mainstays Carlo Paalam, Daniel Maamo, John Vincent Pangga, Judelyn Casin, and many others.
And today, almost 100 neophytes (both boys and girls) from Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental and all over Northern Mindanao are regularly sweating it out to learn the basic rudiments of boxing at a city-run training facility in Upper Macasandig, hoping that someday they would achieve their dreams and aspirations in life through the art of boxing (Ian Fuentes/CIO).
