Written by NLB
A TWO-DAY workshop aimed at enabling Cagayan de Oro City’s capacity to lure in European investments on organic waste processing facilities was held Tuesday, May 5 at the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (CLENRO) Conference Room, this city.

The workshop which concludes on Wednesday, May 6 and is attended by various City Hall departments is sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme Philippines under the European Union-Philippines Green Economy Partnership, a ₱3.67 billion (€60 million) grant-funded program.

Cagayan de Oro City generates 460 tons of waste daily of which 54 percent is organic or biodegradable. Through this activity City Hall hopes to develop business proposals for European investments in waste-to-energy (biogas), food processing and water treatment facilities.

Following a visit by 16 European Union Ambassadors on January 14 this year, City Hall departments completed a series of strategic sessions, including an Inception Workshop in January and a Portfolio Work Planning session in February.

Under this initiative City Hall under Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy’s administration aims to transform Cagayan de Oro City’s waste management into a magnet for international investment that would produce renewable energy and organic fertilizers as part of efforts to provide a sustainable response to the current rise in the costs of fuel and synthetic fertilizers.
