The 44th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week celebration in Cagayan de Oro City kicked off yesterday with the theme, "Pamahalaan Kabalikat sa Pagtupad sa Pantay na Edukasyon, Trabaho at Kabuhayan, Tugon sa Pagpapalakas ng Taong May Kapansanan."
The Persons with Disabilities Affairs Office and the City Social Welfare Development Department PWD Section spearheaded the activities with a eucharistic mass at the St. Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral, followed by a motorcade and a short program at City hall quadrangle.
Committee on Social Services Chairperson City Councilor Girlie Balaba, along with its Vice Chair Ian Mark Nacaya and members, City Councilors Dra. Malou Gaane and Atty. Edgar Cabanlas, manifested their support and commitment to protect the rights of the PWDs.
Meanwhile, Acting City Administrator Atty. Roy Hilario Raagas, who represented Mayor Rolando 'Klarex Uy', delivered his message highlighting Mayor Klarex’s all-out support to the PWD sector.
Vice Mayor Jocelyn 'Bebot' Rodriguez also expressed her support during the program and gave food packs thereafter.
Also present were City Councilor Roger Abaday; Acting CSWD Officer Anecia Tongson; PDAO Head Ma. Liza Corpuz; CSWD PWD Section Focal Person Ma. Cheryl Gacita, various PWD organizations and non-government organizations.
An estimated 150 representatives from the PWD sector joined the kick-off ceremony.
The annual celebration is pursuant to Proclamation No. 1870 (1970), as amended by Proclamation No. 361 (2000) and Administrative Order No. 35 (2002) issued on August 19, 2000, declaring the third week of July as the ‘National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week’ which shall culminate on the birthdate of the Sublime Paralytic Apolinario Mabini on July 23 each year.
